About VTES

Virginia Tech Electric Service has been the provider of primary electrical distribution service to the campus and other Blacksburg customers for more than 125 years.

Launched in 1893, VTES is the electric utility provider for Virginia Tech Blacksburg, Virginia campus and about 6,000 residential and commercials customers in the Town of Blacksburg. View a map of the service area.

VTES operates in a similar manner to other electric utility organizations, and most of the electric power used by VTES customers is purchased under a contract with American Electric Power Company. VTES rates are comparable to those of other electric utility providers.

There are over 1,300 “Hokie” lights and 650 street lights on Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus, and more than 1,000 street lights and 370 dusk to dawn lights within the Town of Blacksburg.
